James K Lowe annual fine arts commission
This wonderful emerging talent has been the recipient of this year's Commission from the Auckland Festival of Photography Trust, we are delighted to support James work and cant wait to see the exhibition which opens at Aotea Gallery, Aotea Center from Saturday 9th June. James K Lowe is a 23-year-old graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts. James is relatively new to the art of photography, having begun experimenting while at Elam, but already he demonstrates a sophisticated style and very particular point of view. His meticulous photography is influenced by existentialist philosophy and also heavily informed by film - his images carefully constructed to create a heightened naturalism. His photographs suggest captured moments within a larger narrative, a larger unknown which happens before and after the image. Congratulations to James for his continuing series of portraits in this exhibition in Festival 2012.
Talking Culture Sunday Series at Auckland Art Gallery
Presented by Lowepro. Sunday 10th June, 1pm hear about 1day6cities, with photographers Daniel Alexander and Patrick Dalton talks about this international timelapse project and at 3pm Getty Image photographers Hannah Johnston and Phil Walter discuss sports photography and the upcoming London Olympics. More here.
Auckland Council news
In response to the article on Stuff - Councillor Casey states the obvious about wasting ratepayer money on RWC countdown clock - our Festival has only just heard we have no allocated Council funding at all from 1st July 2012 despite asking since last November for a reasonable amount.......and to correct this Stuff article we have not been given $200,000 in contestable funding.
We ask that you let your local Councillor know of your dissatisfaction at us currently having no funding from 1st July. See here for the emails of your local Councillors and email in support of your Auckland Festival of Photography continuing after 1st July.
