Nikon Auckland Photo Day goes to China

We are delighted to announce that  for the very first time Nikon Auckland Photo Day is heading to China, as part of a cultural exchange between partner Festivals in the AsiaPacific Photoforum.  The Auckland Festival of Photography and Pingyao International Photography Festival are working together this year to showcase the images of 42 Auckland photographers who participated in 2012 Nikon Auckland Photo Day at their annual Pingyao event.

This is a very exciting development for the 42 selected photographers, whose work will be seen by an average audience of 200,000 this September and another exciting opportunity for the Auckland Festival of Photography to showcase some of the entries of our annual day in the life of Auckland competition after our exhibition last year of 15 Auckland Photoday images at the MAP 2011 Festival in Toulouse. Not only are we exporting Auckland's homegrown cultural identity, as created by Aucklanders to China, we are also representing New Zealand at an international expose of world class photography in the world's most populated country. This is a milestone achievement for the Festival and the Auckland region.

The Asia Pacific PhotoForum is a collaborative group of photography festivals in the Asia-Pacific region that aims to promote photography and photographic art to the broadest possible audience. The Auckland Festival of Photography Trust would like to extend it's thanks and gratitude to the Chinese Government for accepting this showcase Nikon Auckland Photo Day exhibition into Pingyao. We would also like to extend a big thanks to Nikon for their ongoing support and key sponsorship of this cultural exchange between Auckland, New Zealand and Pingyao, China. James K Lowe - The Golden Region

In addition to the Nikon Auckland Photo Day exhibition showing in Pingyao, we are also presenting the Festival's  2012 Annual Fine Arts Commission recipient, James K Lowe's new work, created specifically for our Festival this year.  This work has garnered the interest of two top international photography Festivals in the Asia Pacific region -  Pingyao International Photography Festival this month and also the Angkor Photo Festival in December.  For James "this is great news" and he is delighted to have his new work showcased to new audiences. The Trust are very pleased to be able to offer these additional exhibitions to James to help grow the international recognition of his talent.

Auckland Photo Blog - September

The Photo of the Month for July was by Young Chul Park - Pilgrims - Bethells Beach. The next few weeks in September will be an open theme for your photography, then in October we will, for the first time since 2006, celebrate the wonderful annual Indian community festivities of Diwali across the Auckland region. Look out for more details starting the 1st October. Thanks to Asia NZ Foundation.

"Diwali (also called Deepavali) is a major Hindu festival. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas (as illustrated). Fireworks are associated with the festival in some regions of the country.

Deepavali is celebrated for five consecutive days in the Hindu month of Ashwayuja. It usually occurs in October/November, and is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals of India. Hindus, Jains and Sikhs alike regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships. For Jains it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Jain year. It is also a significant festival for the Sikh faith."
