Welcome to Festival Zone for May 2014. Almost 3 weeks to go until we kick of this year's Festival officially. This year we are presenting memorable international and New Zealand artists exhibitions, and we hope there is something to inspire you during our 11th June season. And yes it's still FREE.

Signature exhibitions

Signature exhibitions have some excellent artist shows, Shigeyuki Kihara at Corbans Arts Center from late May, from 9 June in Otara is Floral Show; Local Exotic featuring rising Pacific artist Janet Lilo at Fresh Gallery and Rachael Rakena presents her indigenous portraiture imaging work in Mata Waka at Nathan Homestead plus many more. The annual winter Festival is a highlight of the Auckland event calendar and draws a large regionwide audience and international visitors. Festival programmes can be downloaded or viewed on our website or we have printed copies available at our office in Parnell. Email info.photo.festival@xtra.co.nz if you need some.

Our Portfolio Reviews by Chris Rainier at Auckland Museum are now fully booked, all other reviewer sessions are booking quickly so try to be in touch soon for your FREE Portfolio Review, supported by HP.

And don't forget our original concept evening circuit of exhibition openings, with this year's Festival Tuesday on 3rd June starts at 6pm til 9pm. Nikon Auckland Photo Day - 7 June 24 hours

Auckland Festival of Photography very own "day in the life" photo competition, Nikon Auckland Photo Day is on Saturday, June 7, when you have 24 hours to capture your own prize winning image of a day in the life of Auckland. Groups, families, individuals can take part with any camera, as long as the photo is taken on 7 June in Auckland!

Donations towards the Auckland Festival of Photography 2014

We are a registered charitable trust that develops and grows with the support of grants, sponsors and donations. We want to keep the Festival free to the public and open to participation by everyone, so we are seeking donations to support the 2014 Festival - all donations are tax deductible, donate now here - any amount from each of you will help us heaps!

Kids Fringe programme

2014’s Festival now has 63 Fringe exhibitions including a record number of Kids participating in a series of exhibitions, these youth shows start at more than ten Auckland Libraries across the region, as well as West Auckland Schools at Projectspace in Henderson, Through Young Eyes at Hibiscus Gallery in Orewa, APH at Long Bay College, while older students work can be seen at Pearce Gallery Whitecliffe, or at Media Design School. The passion for photography in youth culture is massive.

The Fringe programme represents the ultimate road trip through Auckland and beyond for anyone who wants to share the observations of our emerging and established photographers. Exhibitions can be found within arts and community venues, museums, libraries, shops, schools and cafes, colleges, churches and tertiary sites.

Full Fringe programme. Fringe preview openings in early/mid May are the Korean Photography Association at Mairangi Bay Arts Center from 8 May and Sense of Place at Papakura Art Gallery from 12 May. In Ponsonby at Artstation from 13 May is Great South Road and from 15 May is Rhythm of Light. See full programme for more details.

May 2014 is an Open theme. Send in up to 9 entries per photographer this month. Next month's theme will focus on "Festival" taken at the Festival events last year and this year, so if you have some of friends, artists or exhibitions in our Festival then from 1st June you can help create an online archive for us.
