Queen's Birthday weekend 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the inauguration of Maori Writers and Artists - later known as Nga Puna Waihanga. The organisation, driven by artists for artists covered the literary, performance and visual aspects of Maori creativity.

Those involved became leaders in a contemporary Maori arts movement that has impacted on the national and international stage. Over fifty photographic images by John Miller and Gil Hanly taken at the annual hui from 1973 until the early 90's document some of the NPW story.
