2011 is the inaugural year of the Auckland Festival of Photography’s Annual Commission – the sole annual public commission of photographic art by a fine arts photographer in New Zealand . The Commission provides an opportunity to support and promote a young photographic artist of great talent as well as create an important cultural and artistic asset for present and future Auckland audiences to enjoy. The 2011 Annual Commission was awarded to Roberta Thornley.

Hurst explores notions of colonialism and feminism in relation to emblematic objects from the domestic sphere. Her practice questions conventional notions of representation, combining trompe l’oeil techniques with a subversive technological approach. Scanned images are digitally sewn together, referencing traditional gender-biased media.

Beate Gütschow

Beate Gütschow’s photography addresses the construction of imagery, both within the medium itself, through the use of digital and analogue technologies, and the cultural conditions that influence the creation of imagery. Gütschow’s compositions reference 17th Century landscape painting as well as the architectural and documentary photography of the1950s and ’60s.

Michael Hall has been a practising professional photographer for over 20 years. Throughout that time, he has built a considerable reputation in Australia and internationally as both a fine art and commercial photographer.

Remnants of an industrial metropolis, Frank Schwere's photographs depict the decay of America's once shining beacon of industrialisation. Empty streets, burnt out shells of houses, industrial ruins, abandoned public buildings, vacant lots, derelict churches, weeds and potholes, are today the face of Detroit.
Drift

There are two strands of meaning to the word drift. One is of a slow, and usually deep, accumulation of particles that eventually buries or hides an object. The other is of a gradual, irresistible, and frequently directionless movement. Both carry a sense that something has changed, in the end often drastically, but at such a leisurely, almost imperceptible pace, that the resulting loss or potential menace is not immediately realised.

Edith Amituanai’s work draws on documentary and constructed photographic traditions. In 2007 she was the first recipient of the Marti Friedlander Photographic Award. In 2008 her exhibition Dejeuner was a Walters Prize finalist. Home/School has developed from La fine del mondo, a series focused on a family who had resettled in Massey from Myanmar.
Eye Catch: jewellery and photography

Jewellery has a developed relationship with photography. Historically jewellery played a strong role in portrait photography because it was capable of communicating significant information about the sitter’s character and status. For the contemporary jeweller the relationship with photography has evolved to engage the viewer in ways that deliberately manipulate these meanings.
Faculty of Wonder - Lost and Found

Wonderfully witty and inventive collaborative artists Edwards and Johann bring their photographic skills and imaginations to transform the gallery into a magical spectacle. Inspired by a variety of sources including museum displays, theatre and found objects, Lost and Found combines photography, drawing, collage and moving image to create a hybrid world where the real and the imagined mysteriously merge.

Mari Mahr - Two Walking

Photography is often spoken about in relation to memory or the past; in this exhibition two series by Hungarian artist Mari Mahr (currently London/Berlin based) catalogue a place outside of time. Two Walk in Paris and Two Walk in Edinburgh - sixteen photographs, each accompanied by text from Wellington poets Gregory O’Brien and Jenny Bornholdt - are about the acts of walking and talking, and most significantly, looking through cities together.
Private Moon

Monday-Friday 9am - 4pm
Leonid Tishkov presents staged photographs whereby his ’private moon’ is placed in particular environments, adding to the narrative, performing as a specific signifier, yet emitting light. This Russian artist raises critical questions about the nature of documentary and the relationship between public and private domains in capitalist societies.

State-Space is a photographic examination by Caryline Boreham of publicly funded institutions involved in the flow of goods, information and people. The rooms are the physical sites of institutional ideas and ideals and can be defined by their functionality, their lack of natural light and a heterotopic access for users.

A joint exhibition of new works by Becky Nunes and Jan Young, surface offers both a barrier and an invitation to the gaze. In her series of still lifes, Nunes engages with ideas of tapu, ritual and superstition, where objects accrue meaning through repeated acts of devotion. Young’s direct portraits of women invite the viewer to contemplate persona without the presence of environmental clues.
The First City in History

Fiona Amundsen’s The First City in History is the second project in an ongoing series of works that address both site and the intangible cultural mechanisms such as economics, politics and history - through which such sites are created. Focused on Hiroshima around the area of the Peace Memorial Park.
The Floating
The Black Asterisk • POSTPONED
The Floating is Stuart Broughton’s fourth solo exhibition and incorporates some previously shown works with new unseen images to create a narrative that contemplates the motif of floating: elevating the haute quotidian and setting the everyday adrift on a visual excursion.

Four graduate artists from Auckland University of Technology (AUT): Jia-Yin (Jane) Loo, Grace Chai, Olivia Garelja, and Nick Konings will exhibit digital media underpinned by myths and ideas of reflection and appearance, illusion and essence, imitation and emanation.
