Mirjam van Sabben;Night Fishing at Cornwallis; This photo was taken on the 9th of June 2018 at Cornwallis beach. I hadn’t intended to take photos at this location but on a whim decided to swing by it on my way to Little Huia. My impromptu decision rewarded me with a spectacular view of a large cloud formation over the Manukau Harbour. Stars peek through its gaps. On the left under the glow of the city, the top of the Sky Tower and its reflection on the water can be seen. To the right, people are fishing from the wharf. I wasn’t confident I would be get them looking sharp with my long exposure, but one fisherman held still for the entirety of my shot, beautifully silhouetted against the night sky.
Mirjam van Sabben;Te Komoki Ancient Pa Under Ancient Stars; This photo was taken on the 9th of June 2018 at Little Huia. Many driving through this tiny seaside village on their way to Whatipu Beach are unaware of the rich history of this beautiful landmark. Te Komoki, known by locals as Jacky’s Peak, is one of the best preserved pa sites in the Waitakere Ranges, used in the past by Te Kawerau a Maki tribe inhabiting the area. Both this pa and the light of the stars by the time we see them are ancient. They are of the past, and yet seen and even preserved, by my camera in the present. This notion of preserving history has always fascinated me, as has astronomy. To combine the two in a single one hour long exposure was a great joy. The view is of the constellation Carina, and includes within it a large nebula and several open star clusters as they circled around the Southern Cross. The turquoise colour seen above the cloud on the left of the cone is a Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galax

Mirjam van Sabben;Lion Rock Recreation;I took this abstract image of Piha in my own home on the 9th of June 2018.. Years ago I had taken a photo of Lion Rock at twilight, and printed it onto an A2 canvas. To take this shot, I placed that canvas on the ground and high above it positioned a glass dish which I filled with some water and oil. By adding some dish washing liquid, the hard edges of the oil thickened to form rings with depth. To create the ring within a ring effect seen in the top circle, I broke the oil bubble up using a skewer, guided an already formed bubble inside, and quickly closed the gap again. I waited until the smaller bubbles on the left of the top ring emulated the shape of Lion Rock behind it before taking the photo. I wanted people to instantly recognise this iconic Auckland landmark, but then pause to wonder what the image actually was and how it could have been made. My intention was to re create Lion Rock, even as doing so was recreational for me something t
