Enrico Dagnino- Immigrants Forced to Return
Dagnino's 2009 photographs document the return to Libya of African migrants and refugees intercepted by a Guardia di Finanzia patrol boat in Italian waters. Ostensibly set up by the Italian government to police illegal finance, smuggling and drug trafficking, the patrol boats are also used to keep out irregular boat migrants to Italy who are customarily returned without Italian authorities carrying out any checks for illness, pregnancy, vulnerable children or victims of human trafficking, despite being under international legal obligations to do so. These migrants and refugees are also being returned without being allowed to make a case for asylum, some having escaped situations where their lives were endangered. On return to Libya, the refugees are detained by authorities and subjected to abuse. Soundtrack by London Symphony Orchestra. Curated by Françoise Callier, Angkor Photo Festival. Presented by Lowepro.
