Images of the Polish Children's Camp in New Zealand.
After a harrowing experience following the Russian invasion of Eastern Poland at the beginning of WW2, 733 young Polish children and 102 adult caregivers arrived in New Zealand on the 1st of November 1944. They had experienced a 4 year journey that had taken them to forced labour camps in Siberia then the beginning of a freedom in Persia.
New Zealanders welcomed these 'First Refugees' as they were transported by train to Pahiatua Camp, a place they named 'Little Poland'.
This was to become their first home in New Zealand.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the 'Children of Pahiatua'.
