Jozef Ulma
Theme
Ulma was a record-keeper of his lived reality through photography. He took images of his family, local people and Markowa Village life in rural Poland – grounded subjects which mattered to this well to do peasant with a strong social conscience. He sharpened his lens with a touch of brilliance, ended too soon with the spattered print of young people whom the family was hiding on that fateful day. Jozef Ulma stood up to religious and cultural hatred in a time of war and terror – and paid the ultimate price.
