Signature exhibitions

Today sees the opening for one of New Zealand's best loved photographers, Gil Hanly, at the Pah Homestead. Her exhibition Artists in Situ covers her deep and long term involvement with the arts scene over five decades and this show has been specially curated for the Auckland Festival of Photogrphy. Opens tonight at 6pm. You can read more about the venerable Gil Hanly on our media page. Tomorrow, 4th June from 5pm is the exhibition China by two international artists, Paul Batt (Aus) and Fernando Montiel Klint (Mexico) who show for the first time in New Zealand. Later this week is the NZIPP annual exhibition of their Infocus Awards at the Vero Center, also on 6 June as well is Melbourne based NZ artist Patrick Pound at Melanie Roger Gallery. Next weekend on the 8th June we have Chris McLennan's show A Year in the Wildlife at Shed 5 which opens to the public at 6.30pm on Friday 7th June so come along after work to see this wonderful story tellers's work, sponsored by Nikon and HP. And we are also delighted to partner with Papakura  Art Gallery for a rare glimpse at Fiona Pardington's own collection of her work which she has selected for public exhibition, opens at 1030am on Sat 8th June. Also from Saturday are the ever popular Magnum projections at the Aotea Center Gallery, this year we show Chris Steele-Perkins work around natural disasters. See all upcoming exhibitions on our Festival Calendar.

Annual Fine Arts Commission - Jennifer Mason

See this talented artist's new work for the Festival down at Silo 7 until to June 21. This is the first site specific photographic  installation down at the Silo Park and the official opening is on at 4pm today, so come on down and meet the artist.

Jennifer  Mason is an Auckland-born artist working in the medium of photography. She has studied photography in New York (2004); gained a BFA / BA from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland (2005); and has won numerous art awards for her work, which also feature in prominent New Zealand and U.S.A. collections. In her current work she alters and transforms photographs of interiors into new spaces that contain odd spatial transplants that manipulate the appearance fo scale and perspective.  Light, material, space, line and shadow are paramount in her work. Thanks to Creative New Zealand and Sacred Hill. A covered outdoor exhibition with location support by Waterfront Auckland. 

Festival Tuesday Circuit - June 4th

Come join us on our annual Festival Tuesday Circuit on Tuesday evening, see 14 shows in one night, courtesy of Unitec. Plan your night ahead of time. There are some good shows on the Circuit and most are having functions tomorrow and celebrating the Festival in this unique gallery dash way. No rain date, just bring a brollie and your hat! FREE event.

Talking Culture Sunday Series - June 9th

Free - At 1pm is John Crawford, who will be showing his work across the decades including his headline news Aerial Nudes series, following John will be the must see Getty Images photographers, Phil Walter, and Hannah Johnston who will be discussing shooting the All Black games at 3pm. Parking available at $4 a day at Victoria St West carpark opposite Albert Park, vouchers at info desk at Art Gallery or use public transport.

Festival news

The Portfolio Reviews for 8th June are now fully booked. Thanks to HP for their support of this new initiative. 

Talks this week: Thurs 6th June is Michael Hall at the Maritime Museum at 7.30pm to 8.30pm, Sat 8th June at 3pm hear the venerable Ron Brownson speak on Recent Auckland Photography at Northart and earlier this morning on 8th at 11am is Jae Hoon Lee at Corbans discussing his work in Untouched as Unknown. Some great insights into the artists and people behind the work on show in this year's Festival.
